Portable storage you carry on you. Every backpack holds a full double chest worth of items, is stamped with its owner, and is protected against duplication.

Place 8 Diamonds in a ring around a single Chest in a crafting table. The recipe is shaped, so the Chest must sit in the middle slot:
D D D / D C D / D D DD = Diamond, C = ChestShift-clicking the crafting result is blocked on purpose. It would let you craft several backpacks in one click and sneak past the holding limits, so backpacks must be taken out one at a time. If you already own your personal backpack, the result slot shows nothing until you either lose it or trade it away.
Each backpack opens as a 54 slot container, the same size as a double chest, laid out as 6 rows of 9. Contents are stored inside the item itself, so a backpack keeps its loot through drops, deaths, and server restarts.
Backpacks cannot be nested. Placing a backpack inside another backpack is blocked, and so is using one backpack to smuggle another.
You may carry at most one backpack that you crafted, and at most one backpack that belongs to another player. Anything over that limit is dropped at your feet instead of silently vanishing, so you never lose the items you were already carrying.
This keeps backpacks a personal tool rather than a bulk storage exploit. A backpack is tied to the player who crafted it, shown on the item as its Owner line.
When you die, your backpack drops at your death spot instead of being destroyed. It then starts a one hour countdown, ticking live on the item lore under a red DROPPED ON DEATH warning.
Once that hour is up the backpack, and everything inside it, is deleted permanently. Loot it before the timer runs out. Nothing is refunded afterwards.
Every backpack is stamped the moment it is crafted with a unique ID and a SHA-256 security hash, both of which stay on the item lore and can be read back with /backpacks inspect. No two backpacks can legitimately share an identity, even when they were crafted from identical ingredients.
The real protection is at runtime. Your backpack's contents live inside the item itself and are written back when you close the window, a backpack can only be open in one place at a time, and while it is open the backpack item is locked in your hand so it cannot be swapped out from under the session. Putting a backpack inside another backpack is blocked outright, and disconnecting mid-view closes and saves the session normally.

Regular players use backpacks without any command at all.
